Ergonomics Support During Tight Budgets – Free Evaluations, Zero-Cost Solutions, and Limited Matching Funds Available

As Colorado State University plans for a challenging budget outlook over the next several years, departments across campus are being asked to do more with less. Rising costs for insurance, utilities, and operations have created real constraints, and discretionary funding is understandably limited.

That is exactly why now is an important time to take advantage of CSU’s ergonomics resources.

Free Ergonomic Evaluations

CSU’s ergonomics program offers free ergonomic evaluations for office, industrial, custodial, food service, animal care, and other job types across campus. These evaluations identify risk factors, discomfort drivers, and practical adjustments that can reduce injury risk and improve comfort and productivity. There is no cost to the department for the assessment itself.

Ergonomics Does Not Have to Cost a Penny

One of the most common misconceptions about ergonomics is that it requires expensive equipment. In reality, many effective solutions cost nothing at all.

Simple examples include:

  • Reams of paper, books, or binders used as monitor risers
  • Old theses or manuals repurposed as footrests
  • Repositioning existing equipment to improve posture
  • Adjusting task flow, reach distances, or work height
  • Scheduling microbreaks and task variation

If a department has no budget for purchases, that is completely okay. Ergonomics is about problem-solving, not buying products.

Limited Matching Funds Still Available

For departments that do need equipment, there is still limited ergonomics matching funding available, with approximately 4–6 spots remaining. With campus budgets under pressure, these matching funds can help departments make needed improvements that might otherwise be delayed or denied.

Why This Matters Now

Preventing musculoskeletal injuries helps reduce lost time, discomfort, and workers’ compensation costs. During a tight fiscal environment, prevention is one of the smartest investments a department can make—and in many cases, it costs nothing. If your department has been postponing ergonomic support due to budget concerns, this is a good time to reach out. Free evaluations, zero-cost solutions, and limited matching funds can still make a meaningful difference.
